Marshall Park

Marshall Park is a peaceful green space in Uptown Charlotte, offering stunning skyline views, a reflecting pond with a fountain, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, making it both a scenic retreat and a place of reflection. The park’s serene walking paths and open lawns provide a welcome escape from the city’s bustle, while its historical significance adds layers of meaning to the landscape.

The park occupies land that was once part of Brooklyn, Charlotte’s largest African American neighborhood in the early 20th century. In the 1960s, the city’s controversial urban renewal program demolished nearly 1,500 structures, displacing residents and businesses to make way for government buildings and new developments. Marshall Park was created as part of this redevelopment, named after James B. Marshall Sr., a former city manager who had envisioned a park in this space.

Dedicated in 1973, Marshall Park has since become a symbol of both renewal and remembrance, offering a tranquil setting where visitors can enjoy nature while reflecting on Charlotte’s evolving history. While future redevelopment plans have been debated, the park remains a cherished green space where the city’s past and present meet.
