    Guide

Where the Star-Spangled Banner was born: a compact fort with sweeping harbor views and living history. It’s an easy win—flat paths, open lawns, and a visitor film that sets the scene in under 15 minutes.

Start at the visitor center for your map, then follow the ramp to the east wall for the best harbor vantage. Time your visit for a flag raising or lowering—the ranger talk turns the place into a story you’ll remember.

For a slower visit, circle the star-shaped ramparts clockwise and watch ships move in and out of the Patapsco.

The Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center, a branch of the Children’s Museum of Houston, was established in 2016 within the historic Imperial Sugar Company refinery in Fort Bend County. This center excels in kindling a love for learning among children with its interactive, educational exhibits that are infused with the local culture and history.

The center boasts six galleries of hands-on exhibits for children up to 12 years old, including “Kidtropolis, USA,” a role-play mini-city, and “How Does It Work?”, which promotes scientific inquiry. The “Tot*Spot” is designed specifically for toddlers, ensuring engaging learning opportunities for the very young.

The Discovery Center sets itself apart with its intimate, community-centric environment, offering a less congested and more localized experience than its Houston counterpart. Housed in a former sugar refinery, its distinct charm and educational focus make it a compelling visit even for those familiar with the main Houston museum. Will a visit here spark a new curiosity in the young explorers in your life?
