Flowing through the heart of northern Georgia, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) encompasses a 48-mile stretch of the Chattahoochee River, offering a natural retreat from the urban hustle of Atlanta. Established in 1978, this protected area preserves both the river’s ecological integrity and its rich cultural history. And in 2012, the Chattahoochee became America’s first National Water Trail.
The CRNRA is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, featuring 15 distinct park units along the river’s course. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including:
- Hiking and Biking: Explore numerous trails that meander through lush forests and offer scenic river vistas.
- Water Activities: The river’s gentle currents make it ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and tubing.
- Fishing: Anglers can fish for trout and bass in the river’s well-stocked waters.
Each unit within the CRNRA offers unique experiences, from the rugged cliffs of the Palisades to the tranquil wetlands of Island Ford. Wildlife abounds, with opportunities to spot deer, herons, river otters, and more.
