    Guide

Where the Star-Spangled Banner was born: a compact fort with sweeping harbor views and living history. It’s an easy win—flat paths, open lawns, and a visitor film that sets the scene in under 15 minutes.

Start at the visitor center for your map, then follow the ramp to the east wall for the best harbor vantage. Time your visit for a flag raising or lowering—the ranger talk turns the place into a story you’ll remember.

For a slower visit, circle the star-shaped ramparts clockwise and watch ships move in and out of the Patapsco.

Barton Springs Pool is the crown jewel of Austin’s outdoor scene—a three-acre, spring-fed pool with water that stays a refreshing 68-70°F year-round. Located within Zilker Park, the pool is fed by underground springs from the Edwards Aquifer, creating some of the clearest, cleanest swimming water in Texas.

A local favorite since the 1800s, the pool has seen everyone from Indigenous tribes and early settlers to hippies and celebrities take a dip. It’s even been called the “Soul of Austin”—a place where locals and visitors alike lounge on grassy slopes, swim alongside fish and turtles, and soak in the city’s laid-back vibe.

Barton Springs is swim-at-your-own-risk, with lifeguards on duty during peak hours and a deep end that plunges to 18 feet. Sunbathers relax on the banks, while thrill-seekers take the infamous diving board plunge. The pool is also home to the endangered Barton Springs Salamander, a tiny amphibian found nowhere else in the world.

With its rich history, crystal-clear waters, and unbeatable summer vibes, Barton Springs Pool is an absolute must-visit—whether you’re cooling off after a hike, floating under the sun, or just experiencing one of Austin’s most beloved spots.
