    Guide

Where the Star-Spangled Banner was born: a compact fort with sweeping harbor views and living history. It’s an easy win—flat paths, open lawns, and a visitor film that sets the scene in under 15 minutes.

Start at the visitor center for your map, then follow the ramp to the east wall for the best harbor vantage. Time your visit for a flag raising or lowering—the ranger talk turns the place into a story you’ll remember.

For a slower visit, circle the star-shaped ramparts clockwise and watch ships move in and out of the Patapsco.

Founded in 1973 as Nexus, a grassroots artist cooperative, the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center has grown into one of the Southeast’s leading hubs for modern and experimental art. Housed in a converted industrial warehouse, it presents over 200 artists annually, commissioning new works from creators who may not have had a major exhibition in the region. Unlike traditional museums, its non-collecting model ensures an ever-changing lineup of cutting-edge installations, spanning painting, sculpture, video, and immersive experiences.

Beyond its exhibitions, the center pulses with creative energy through 125+ programs a year, including Contemporary Kids, Contemporary Cocktails, and artist talks that invite visitors to engage with the art in unexpected ways. The Studio Artist Program supports 13 working artists with subsidized on-site studios, making it a rare space where art isn’t just displayed—it’s made.

With free admission every day since 2015, Atlanta Contemporary is a place where emerging talent meets bold ideas, proving that contemporary art is anything but predictable.
