Founded in 1978 by filmmaker Dan Moore Sr., the APEX Museum (African-American Panoramic Experience) is the oldest Black history museum in Atlanta and the only one solely dedicated to telling the stories of the African Diaspora. Located on historic Auburn Avenue, once the epicenter of Black business and culture, the museum explores African American history through exhibits that connect past struggles to present achievements.
Visitors can follow the journey from ancient African civilizations to the transatlantic slave trade, Reconstruction, and the Civil Rights Movement. A recreated Yates & Milton Drugstore highlights one of Atlanta’s first Black-owned businesses, while rotating exhibits ensure there’s always something new to discover. With over 85,000 visitors annually from all 50 states and 50 countries, it remains a vital space for education, reflection, and understanding.
Every exhibit, artifact, and story sheds light on the resilience, innovation, and influence of African Americans—ensuring history is preserved and passed forward.
