    Where the Star-Spangled Banner was born: a compact fort with sweeping harbor views and living history. It’s an easy win—flat paths, open lawns, and a visitor film that sets the scene in under 15 minutes.

    Start at the visitor center for your map, then follow the ramp to the east wall for the best harbor vantage. Time your visit for a flag raising or lowering—the ranger talk turns the place into a story you’ll remember.

    For a slower visit, circle the star-shaped ramparts clockwise and watch ships move in and out of the Patapsco.

    This 2.5 mile walking trail, marked by a paved line of red bricks and red paint, weaves through downtown Boston as it purposefully passes 16 sites of national historic significance. It was first imagined in 1951, started as a simple set of 30 signs on street corners, and today is among the most comprehensive and celebrated way-finding tools for tourists in the world.

    The best place to start walking the loop is at the Boston Common Visitor Center at 139 Tremont Street, but it’s not required- you can pick up this path at any point and enjoy the sites at your own pace!
